Letter from Edward Thomas to the poet Gordon Bottomley. Sent from Elses Farm, The Weald, Kent. Archival ref: 424/1/1/1/10/40

My dear Gordon,

This is only a bulletin - saying
that I am in a bit of temporary sanity &
have actually written 500 words of something
not about a book. Also I called at Bahner's
last Wednesday (being only up in town for a
day & having only a day to spare) and was glad to
be there, tho I confess his shyness makes me
nervous. He asks me to use his room when
I may want to write while in town - I think of
taking a friend there when I call next - Freeman,
whose French, Italian & Spanish old songs would
please you.
Bahner said it was possible you would
come to town for a little while.
By the way, Heaton Cooper's
pictures of the lakes are wonderful in their
stupid wickedness. He saw a cheap Christmas
card when a child - he received a
box of paints at the same time - hence his art.
His swans seem to embody Jehovah -not Zeus.
Yours ever
Edward Thomas
