My dear Gordon,
Thanks again. I adopt your
suggestions except one - I meant I hoped
Jefferies felt pleased with his faithful
satire as much as felt in he was bound
to regret it. ' A Josephine' - he mentions
'Josephine' once for her eyes, so it is cryptic.
Perhaps Mrs J would have liked me to leave it
out. Your suggestions never annoy.

No it isn't Shorter's [illegible] I
heard of. You won't like mine when you see
it. You say nice things about the Jefferies -
will wait.
I can't escape from Worple just
yet.
Unfortunately I have just got a big

batch of Jeffries' letters which could not
be found when I wanted them. I shall now
have to make my extracts very brief indeed.
They are mainly about his diseases & written
to a benefactor.

Yours ever
Edward Thomas
Have you every heard of a picture of
lady Hamilton known as 'The Surprise'?
J mentions 'The Surprise' & Mrs J
saw it was lady H, but a
learned man assures me there is
no such portrait, but a picture by
Teniers, one by Du Bouf.
