Letter from Edward Thomas to his wife, Helen Thomas. Archival reference: 424/1/1/1/1/189

My dearest friend,
I met Morgan yesterday and he showed me a letter saying
that the steamship "Ross" would not sail owing to damage.
But Morgan says he has set another agent to work at Cardiff
and Newport. Consequently my plans at present are these -
1. To wait until Wednesday for news of a ship - Morgan
goes to Cardiff tomorrow to look out.
2. If I cant find a boat then or Thursday, to write to
Watcyn Wyn and then come on to Porthcawl
At once enclosed double receipt to the Manager of “Literature” at Printing House Square EC
There is nothing to tell you [illegible] that I enjoy my walks in spite of the ever [illegible] [illegible] illegible] am thoroughly bored and unable to write as yet.
Later
Don’t mention my hazy plans to mother.
As to spending the £1.8.0 I should advise you not to buy a dressing gown yet: but do as you like.
and await an answer as to living with him or in the village.
Of course if I don't go to Spain, it will cause several troubles
but I must make the best of it, after a week or so take
absolute rest in Watcyn Wyn's gardens or elsewhere.
I will write to him as soon as possible and (illegible) him;
for as you are sharing a room with mother in Porthcawl
it doesn't matter. I would decide to go to Wales at once
with you, if it were not that rest and the sea were only
obtainable on board a ship.
It depends on what Morgan finds out at Cardiff - but I may come home on Tuesday and after my luggage.
As you see I am all in the air, and only hope you will not be confused by any suggestions.
Remember to bring the sparkles with you and 5 or 5 boxes of cartridges.
I send you the cheque endorsed: get father or mother to change it for you as they used to do for me. I have no stamp at hand: so please forward

We are having fine weather here and I only wish the ship
would sail. I dare not go out so much today and find it
hard to read my only books - Pater Appreciations, Geo Herbert's Temple and Virgil , here.
Tell Father and Mother I am both amiable and well
in this house and give my love to them.
Kiss Merfyn for me and give him my goodbyes.
Excuse this (illegible) chatter, my own sweet little one.
I am ever and wholly yours
Edward
Good night
