The Logans may be in Oxford and I half expect to see them at
any moment, tho I haven't heard from them. Miss Lucas can
hardly call: nor do I think she would if she could, unless her
curiosity is

My dearest friend,
Many thanks for the proofs, I consider them all good, and
shall keep No. 3 and recommend you to get equal numbers of
the other two: Pray be very very careful with your money, for
I am literally penniless.
Please thank Father for his letter and return the enclosed to him.

I don't feel inclined to enumerate the difficulties I
anticipate: but among others you can't fail to see that a
holiday with you in your (possible) condition would not be
the most

comfortable of holidays. Moreover the expense absolutely
forbids it until my prospects, however bad, become certain. It
would be insanity to go about arcadizing with bankruptcy
and the gutter ahead.

There is no news, except that Literature refused my offer of
Shelley's Natural
hard workers.

The Deacon sends me a most affectionate letter. He was pleased
with my somewhat fantastic congratulations on his Silver
wedding.

My work is now making really great improvement; but it
is now of course too late to affect my success very much. I have been wickedly idle this last year (except in the
vacation), and Father will be angry when he sees the class list in
July: for I shall get a 3rd. at most and possibly a plough. Even

Maine says I can only get a 2nd with great good luck: and he
never says what he means.

Still a 2nd. would give me no better prospects than a 3rd or
a 4th. The only thing is that the 2nd is always an honourable
class: the 3rd mainly consists of fools and
