My dearest friend,
I delayed in hopes of soon hearing good news from you. At
present I don't feel disposed to be as hopeful as you. As for
forgetting all about it - you recommend me an impossibility.

Today I walked farther than I intended and have arrived almost
too late for the post. My letter must therefore be very short.

Of the two enclosed patterns I
much prefer the lighter; but I don't care for any of the [illegible].

Confound. I can't write a word. The fact is I am duller than
ever, and was very drunk last night when Oxford celebrated
the relief of Mafeking.

If I can I will write again immediately but the hurry and
everything incapacitate me.
Please tell mother I will
