As you see I grow more & more sterile. It can't be helped, I fear.

My dearest friend,
Your letter was not in the least unsympathetic. Your letters never are. You are wrong in thinking they are the only things you do that delight me, tho right in feeling that they do delight me. As a matter of fact I was very glad to hear of Miss Lucas's visit & that I was a topic flattered flattered my stupidity. Perhaps I shall see her this term. I only wish it was possible for

you to come up here by yourself after the School, tho' I supose it is not. Before school I don't care what happens & I am not keen on seeing either Haynes or the Logans then.
Nothing happens now. I see Elsey occasionally & try to work when I am not exchanging inanities with Maine. The American (illegible) is very tardy; in fact I have had no news

of him. I had a proof of "Two Scholars" from the Atlantic Monthly & am fairly well satisfied. Maine read it but merely remarked on the resemblance of the style to Stevensons'.
All who care for the infant care for you, so don't talk nonsense. Haynes does: everybody does. I should therefore be sorry if you did not appear in the photograph. A sickly maternal smile produced by the photographers (illegible) is
