My dearest friend,
Let me first give you the news. ‘The Atlantic Monthly’ has accepted two out of three of the articles I sent them in January - ‘An Unpublished Author’ and ‘Two Scholars’; the ‘Exiles at Play’ they returned because it was ‘remote from American concerns’. You will remember that its

In my dressing gown. I have done a fair amount of work during the nights and some more pleasant reading. Unfortunately I have been invited out to breakfast for 8.45, and then hard to show up as strong at 10, so that I couldn’t sleep if the pain had gone. It is the root of the departed front tooth that aches, and my mouth is much swollen. However there is nothing to be done, except hope for a better night after [illegible].
It is of course quite light now, and an hour ago I heard the thrushes. We seem to be approaching spring down
In as mainly a translation of his Hecuba of Euripides. Haynes heard at the same time from the Editor, and says I ought to be £1d the richer thereby. I only hope they send proofs. Your letter and this piece of material good fortune were very consoling when I was weary this morning after a break of my early - [illegible]

I am sorry to hear you are again in receipt of Eve’s monthly legacy. It again brings up a question on which you were to consult Mrs Potbury, have you done so?

I am sorry to say I have not been able to sleep on account of toothache, and I am now sitting up
A [illegible] and unbroken slope, and shall rejoice when we enter March. So far I have not seen a snowdrop, nor sat quietly in the sun. How happy you were with Philip Merfyn on your knee - I wish I had been there.
The Welsh plan for summer holiday looks possible and is certainly delightful.
