My dearest friend,
I have no news to give you and am little in the mood for pleasant talks. You may be amused to know that [illegible] [illegible] sent me, through Morgan, half again, the other day. The sum is too small to be of much use; so I shall ask Morgan to buy a ‘christening’ mug with it. I shall entertain my few friends and get them to scratch their names on the outside. It would be a pleasant reminder of the strange contrasts of my varsity life.

I am too busy with my work to write. I have no sooner done one piece than I have another to do: still this chain of papers on my subject is the best way of getting as much as possible out of me. It is long since I wrote a line.
As for Divinity I suppose I shall pass alright, though at present I have not the heart to leave my history for such a paltry subjects. I am paying the fee of £1-1-0 myself; so I have little money left, especially if I must now pay for a pair of gloves purchased last term.
I have heard once or twice from Haynes but he gives no news. He is no certain when he will visit Oxford.

It is splendid news that you are downstairs and hoping to go out in a day or two. Here the weather is generally fine, but sometimes very cold and wet, and the wonder is that I have not had influenza after hours in frigid lecture rooms.
