Padre decorating the altar in his 'Church' in the line
Disgrifiadau
Army chaplain in his chapel, Western Front, during World War I. This photograph shows an army chaplain arranging wildflowers in a vase for the altar in his little chapel. Three other vases of flowers stand on the altar, flanking a simple cross and the chalice and paten used for the sacrament, which are hidden below a cloth.
Also on the altar, there is the chaplain's stole, a scarf-like vestment worn by Catholic or Anglican priests when administering the sacraments.
[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE. A Padre decorating the altar in his "Church" in the line. This little hut which serves as a Church is in a clump of trees barely 200 yards from the front line.']
