Bardsey Island, early monastery circa 1000AD
Bardsey Island, early monastery circa 1000AD
Disgrifiadau
There is a long history of Christianity on Bardsey, the earliest monastic community was founded by St Cadfan in the sixth century, and the island soon became a favoured burial place for the devout. The earliest contemporary reference is an obituary for a monk of Enlli in 1011AD.
It is likely that the early monastery was located in a similar position to the later abbey. There is evidence that this location was settled from early times, not only is it relatively sheltered, with good views of the island and sea, it is also located near to one of the most dependable springs on the island.
