Green library lino print
When I was thinking about the drawing for the print I decided it would be based on Dowlais library and the lovely shadow patterns on the steps up into the library. To get in to the library you do have to climb quite a few steps and it reminded me of when I first climbed them, somewhat in trepidation, not knowing quite what the art group would be like! But they were all very welcoming and not the very serious intimidating artists I feared I would meet : )
As part of the project we were looking at different paintings and one of the watercolours of Merthyr, which showed a very green valley, had a beautiful tree in it. I have some favourite trees around Merthyr and decided to put this tree, which is at the top of Gwaelodygarth road in my drawing. There’s also Cyfarthfa castle and the open cast mine which you see from the library and is very black! So I brought all these elements inside the library for the lino print. When we moved to Merthyr it was amazing to see all the night stars, so I made them big and bold and seven of them to remind me of their maker. We had fun printing them, and trying different coloured papers.
