Hubert was the son of Jan Carel Juta and Marion Sinclair David and the grandson of Thomas and Caroline David, Exeter House, Laugharne. He was born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1900 but frequently visited his mother's family in Laugharne, spending time with his aunts at The Cors. This photo shows him in the uniform of the Scottish Rifles, South African Army during WW1. He later served as a Major in the Coldstream Guards. After the war, Hubert studied law in the U.K. before returning to South Africa to practice.
