Disgrifiad

This is a piece recorded in 2008. It's a "voice-test" to assess the suitability of a song I needed to introduce a short documentary film featuring a famous North Wales "mountain" located a short drive away from my home. Its been designated an "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty" (AONB)

The song had stuck in my mind since first I heard it performed at a Noson Dewi Sant event held in Yr Wyddgrug (Mold) -I knew the song had the makings of a "perfect fit" for use in a future project! The artiste, Nia (not her real name!) is a talented Welsh mathematician/musician. Added poignancy and appropriateness were given to the lyrics when she assured me, "...they were written my mum...!
As a clumsy keyboard tickler and obscure scribbler/composer myself, I can only marvel at the sensitive tone and -to my ears- impeccable, Cymru Gogledd accent, so beautifully evidenced here!

You can hear how the edited audio of this item was subsequently used in my 2010 documentary film of the 200th anniversary of the erection of the landmark, Moel Famau Jubilee Tower.

Technical Notes:
In recent years, this performance has served as an example to students of what might be attempted when only those hardware resources that the enthusiastic amateur might already have to hand are available.

I used a Panasonic G400 3CCD mini-cassette digital camera (very state-of-the-art in its day!). The recording was in a format that, today, would hardly pass as "SD"!

The (first-take) on-board-camera audio, was used to aid post-synchronisation.
The video was compiled from three separate "takes". These consisted of facial/keyboard close-ups and more general, wide-angle shots. Vocals were captured by a plain-vanilla, dynamic "stage" microphone to one (stereo) channel of a Roland R-09, pocket digital recorder with the line-output of the Yamaha digital piano fed to the other channel. The final audio mixing was done in the editing software.

In this configuration the (electronic) keyboard is set to play "silent" to the performer. This offers acoustic-isolation from the mic'd vocals. The performer hears her accompaniment (only) via her headphones!

The performance was edited using "Adobe Premiere Elements v14" software.
(From that day in 2008 to the present time (2023) I have found that this affordable software has done everything needed for my a/v documentary work!)
The technical (director) sub-text is intended for student/engineer training.

I do hope this item will be of assistance to any who wish to capture something of our North Wales (Musical) Heritage and Culture. See you on "our Mountain"?
