The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints developed a strong presence in the Llanelli area in the 1850s and built a chapel in Island Place. Despite steady emigration from the area, when a conference was held in Llanelli in 1868, the Island Place chapel was considered too small and the Athenaeum (now Llanelli Central Library) was used instead.
