Introduction:
This article about William Arthur Jenkins was provided by his daughter Sylvia Jenkins and her partner Paul Sparks. They also provided the photographs shown below. Many people will remember him by his middle name Arthur, and he was a prominent man in the village, getting involved with most village activities as you will see below.
William Arthur Jenkins:
William Arthur Jenkins was born in the village of Glynneath in the September of 1928, he attended the local school until he left in 1943 at the age of 15. He left Glynneath and went to live with relatives in Ledbury, just out side Hereford, where he had a job in the local jam factory.
After his time in the jam factory he decided to join the Army, and served in the 1st Battalion of the Grenadier Guards. After his initial training he was posted to Buckingham Palace, and he was very proud of the fact that his duty was to guard the Queen. He was promoted to Sergeant and was later deployed to serve in Palestine, unfortunately he was wounded there and lost the hearing completely in his right ear. Due to the accident he was sent back to Britain and was invalided out of the Guards. He was sent back to barracks in Essex, where he was to meet his wife to be Joan.
In 1952 Arthur and Joan eventually decided to move back to Wales, and went to live with relatives in Resolven for about a year. He moved to Cwmgwrach in 1953 and lived at Heol Y Graig. He was employed by the Rheola Aluminium works as a Production Foreman in the Rolling Mill, and it was at the Rheola Sports Club that he became interested in weightlifting and fitness. He undertook exams in weightlifting and refereeing which then put him on the road to a career with the Welsh Weightlifting Association, where he was to coach and judge at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games for many years, travelling all over the world to these competitions. (Ed note: I have listed the events he participated in below.)
Quote from Neath Guardian:
He first refereed an international weightlifting match in 1966 when Wales met the Netherlands. Since then, he has officiated in many countries including Spain, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. In addition, Arthur has been team coach for the Welsh team, then team manager and a member of the selection committee. During the last eight years, he has been technical officer in charge of all referees in Wales.Neath Guardian 22.06.1978

Along with attending 6 Commonwealth Games and 6 Olympic Games, Arthur also found time for a number of other more local activities. He was a keen singer and was an active member of the Glynneath Male Voice Choir and the Dunraven Glee Singers who then became the Barbershop Singers. He also gave his time selflessly to serve as the Clerk for Glynneath Town Council.
Unfortunately in 2006 he became unwell and sadly passed away in the December of 2007. As you can see from the article above, he had a very busy and active life and he is greatly missed by the people of the village and those that knew him.
