Evacuees at Maesydderwen 1941

This photograph shows a group of evacuees at Maesydderwen County School, Ystradgynlais in 1941. It was taken by a teacher at the school, Miss Mari Glyn Evans, and the names are written on the back, as follows:
Back: Mollie Holland, Maxine Hunt, Marie Hume, Mabel Jackson (all from Liverpool)
Front: Doreen Davies (Swansea), Morfydd Howells (Llandovery), Josephine Adrian (Swansea), Beryl Jackson (Liverpool), Alma Langridge (London). The lady kneeling on the left of the picture may be one of the teachers.

Apparently a large contingent of children from Liverpool arrived at the school on 19 March 1941 after parts of South Wales were designated as reception areas. Later in the war evacuees also came to the district from Surrey and Kent, and other children came there to escape the bombing of Swansea. A report in the Western Mail on 7 January 1943 refers to between 300 and 400 evacuated schoolchildren billeted in the Ystradgynlais area being entertained to a tea party at the Welfare Hall by the Rural District Council.
