This mislabelled picture is the DC ( direct current) drive motor for the hot breakdown mill at Rheola, that would break down a 14" thick aluminium alloy slab to a 3/4-1" thick tandem blank for finishing on the 3 stand warm Tandem mill. Drive was through a reduction gearbox to a pinion stand coupled to the two hot mill work rolls which were 80" wide. I estimate the power to be about 2500HP but unfortunately the makers plate to the left is not legible. The DC drive allowed rapid reversing of the mill direction to break down the slab with a backward & forward motion of around 12-14 passes through the mill achieved in less than 5 minutes.
