Letter to the Newport Hebrew Congregation regarding the encouragement of young people in small communities to join national youth organisations, 24 May 1960

Disgrifiadau

The letter is from The London Committee of Deputies of the British Jews, also known as The Board of Deputies of British Jews, to the Newport Hebrew Congregation. The letter details that following from a conference which was held in Newcastle in November, 1959 it was decided by the Jewish Youth Organisations Secretaries Committee that special attention should be given to small communities which did not have organised youth groups and that a leaflet had been included to reach young people and encourage them to join one of the national youth organisations.

The London Committee of Deputies of British Jews, also known as the Board of Deputies of British Jews, is the main representative body of the Jewish community in Britain. The Board of Deputies works to safeguard Jewish life in the United Kingdom by promoting and defending religious and civil rights. It was established in 1760 by Spanish and Portuguese Jews to form a standing community and pay respect to the new monarch George III.

Newport Monmouthshire Hebrew Congregation was founded in 1859 by orthodox Jews meeting at a temporary synagogue in Llanarth Street. A synagogue at Francis Street was opened in 1869 and consecrated by the Chief Rabbi Dr Herman Adler in 1871. In 1934 the congregation moved to their Nathan Harris Memorial Hall in Queen's Hill which was converted to a synagogue. In 1997 this synagogue was closed, and the congregation moved to their Prayer House by the Jewish Burial Ground on Risca Road. Within 20 years the congregation had dwindled to a few members able to attend and this too had ceased to hold services.
