An eulogy delivered by Rabbi Michoel Rose, of Cardiff United Synagogue, at Harry Poloway's funeral in Newport's Jewish Cemetery on the 30th of May 2016. He talks of Harry's younger years as a qualified electrical engineer, his volunteering work in the RAF during the Second World War, and his wife Vicky, whom he married in Blackpool. Harry enjoyed nearly 60 years of a happy marriage with two children, whom he loved dearly. He then talks about how Harry excelled in his role as Toastmaster for Cardiff and Newport, and about Harry’s famous declaration that the city of Cardiff is the capital of Wales. Harry also presided over other events such as the openings of the Millennium Centre and Cardiff Bay. He mentions Harry’s charity work, and how Harry was a proud Jew, proud of his traditions, and an inspiration to us all.

Harry Poloway, master of ceremonies and toastmaster, was born in Newport in 1915. He is best known as Newport’s legendary Jewish toastmaster, who hosted ceremonies for Nelson Mandela, the Aga Khan, and the Dalai Lama. He was also the official toastmaster for the British Royal Family.

Harry was known for his passionate work in fundraising for charities (he was a prominent member of the Newport's Rotarians club) and his immense support for the local Jewish communities. For his amazing work he received several honours such as an MBE in 2005. Harry died in 2016.
