The Winter Gardens were later known as the Rhyl Palace and Summer Gardens. The outer wall stretched from Butterton Road up to Sandringham Avenue and from the main front entrance in Wellington Road up to the Promenade. It included a fine skating rink and a large stage where a very fine orchestra gave concerts. Very important demonstrations, musical festivals and Eisteddfodau were held from time to time. The gardens also included grotto and cascade, artificial lake, east terrace and aviary, tennis court, seal pond, recreation room, switch-back railway, refreshment rooms, cricket and football ground, cycle track, conservatories, monkey house, hockey pitch, quoits pitch and bandstand.
By 1882 the Winter Gardens were up for sale, but were withdrawn at the highest bid of £29,000. They were eventually sold in March 1883 for £36,000 to the Reverend Charles Whitaker, but were never financially succesful. Eventually the site was sold for residential developement.
