An interesting photograph from 1909, showing Barry Railway 'F' class tank locomotive No. 33 with one of the short lived Barry Railway auto trains ( Push - pull trains). For this purpose No 33, one of a class intended for work around Barry Docks, was converted to a 0-4-2 T wheel arrangement from the normal 0-6-0 T by disconnecting the rear set of driving wheels, and being spruced up for passenger duty. Two sets of coaches , each comprising a four wheel and six wheel coach were modified to give a drivers cab at the opposite end from the locomotive and fitted with whistle and brake controls linked to the locomotive and a bell system for communication between driver and fireman. The auto trains were used mainly on the Vale of Glamorgan line but the experiment was short lived with instructions being issued for the locomotive to run around its train at the end of each run and work in the conventional manner. The photograph shows the auto at Barry on arrival from Llantwit Major with loco pushing its train. The control wires mentioned can be seen leading from the loco to the first coach.
