Abbey Mill and Grosvenor Chater
Abbey Papermill was established in Greenfield, Holywell in 1821 and taken over by the prestigious Grosvenor Chater of London in 1854. It was the largest paper mill in Wales, producing superior quality writing paper from Esparto grass imported from North Africa. The costant water supply and proximity to mostyn and Greenfield Docks made it an ideal site. Papermaking continued until 1982 when the factory closed. The collected images show both the processes involved and also the social life of the time.
